Like yes we do get a lot of insight into his thoughts and everything, but very rarely is everything he's thinking actually spelled out.

unless they mean "most everything about his mental state is laid out for us, ergo he cannot be very deep because we don't have to theorize or guess"

yes it's easy enough to follow the surface-level plot but there's lots of little stuff you can very easily miss? i'd call that subtlety?
