bumping bc i WILL go on about yttd
ohhh technically i know canon... but i'm really curious about what headcanons you have about midori and shin?
ohohoh
let me comb my thoughts
- i do think that like, things started out well and then got worse as midori got more of a hold over shin
i think that midori liked to give shin expensive gifts that always had those unseen threads attached
there's three major headcanons i've mentioned before, which is that midori transplanted shin's heart with his own, that shin once walked in on his own deconstructed doll, and that midori taught shin how to use a gun
it's hard to pick other things out in specific bc the rest is just like... a vibe. things like midori probably doing things like hooking his arm around shin's shoulder and pulling him in, setting up things to distress him and then being comforting when shin seeked it from him
using their friendship as a tool, point or weapon in persuading shin to do things, being friendly or chipper, making shin doubt his own judgements of whether something was important or not
setting up "puzzles" and "games"
a lot of things that like....... you can't put your finger on (and shin couldn't) on them individually but together and in hindsight were crueller than just your senpai high school friend persuading you to join in on ideas they just came up with
like annie suggested and i have it now, that headcanon that midori got shin to steal sake from his dad's liquor cabinet for them, and in theory that's the sort of thing dumb teens do, in practice for some reason shin was the only one getting a hangover, or comforted while throwing up, or drunk around midori
and like. things where like, midori would do something to shin, under this same sort of plausible deniability, and then be 'okay now your turn' and get him coming AND going bc shin would be distressed it happening to him and then be distressed doing the same for reasons he couldn't articulate
me and annie were talking today about the idea that
shin had violent dreams or thoughts about killing or hurting midori as a subconscious reaction to feeling trapped
and just. feel horrified at himself when they hit his conscious mind
and of course midori would have so much fun with that the moment shin confided in him
as he had fun with shin's worries and fears and insecurities in general
it was only some time AFTER midori disappeared that a lot of this came together for shin
because during the time, midori was scary but also a friend and it's just hhh. it all hurts me so much
oh and uh
probably that at at least one point, midori strangled him
lays here..... i dont know shit about fuck wrt yttd but im so curious i must consume the Lore
why they in a death game... whose turn is it to die...
why all the cool robot ppl so fucked up
crying cuz she just left to go on a bike ride lint come back and tell lavvy the lore
i picked at the game a little bit today and somebody tell me why sara's dad texts like that, it haunts me
ok i wont steal lints thunder in explaining yttd but
"Hello hellooooo! (^^)/ Didja know? Sara's going to a board game meetup! Wonder if she's goin alone.... Papa's worried she might make sum bad friends.... "
komeada can literally have him. why couldnt HE hit sara's dad with a car. why did he have to hit narumi
oh no he texts like a dad.......
i fully believe sara texts her dad and he just replies with a string of emojis 80% of the time drives her mad
we have no idea why he texts like that :' )
it's not that he's in secret evil yakuza organization, he just does
sara literally refuses to use emojis bc her dad is so cringy about them i kno this in my heart
she has sworn off them forever
crying at the concept of a toyota corolla smashing into the death game killing him instantly
this is what happens in the universe where komaeda is in the game i'm declaring it now
lessee... getting to lavvy's q's be the answers require a little more string boarding there
i gave you 9trillion words on the history of technology in elrios ok ill read All Of The String Boarding
hehehe yesss
mutual rambling
bear with me bc plurk is slowing down for me for some reason and it takes like 10 seconds for a message to send
okay so why are they in a death game
we don't know for sure yet, but there have been hints sprimkled about for us
spits YOU DONT EVEN KNOW YET???
we have some pretty significant and horrifying hints
for some reason i always seem to think death game canons are like. the first thing u know is obviously why the death game is happening right??? but maybe i just dont play enough of these games and expect masterminds to be much more polite and upfront
hehehehe yttd loves to play with your expectations of death games
for example, the first chapter antagonist thinks you're the mastermind
and is legit trying to get you and your associates killed or exposed
there was going to be a 'mastermind', but he got killed before the game started
and when he shows up much later and is asked if he's behind all this, seems to find the idea funny
yttd really does seem to be a love letter to dangan ronpa sdr2 and ndrv3 and maybe some other things I haven't seen but mostly those two
because that throughline in particular makes me think of tsumigi, who sure, is the 'mastermind', but in a way where it's clear she's more filling the role than truly pulling the strings, and that's the vibe with the yttd floormasters
anyway I got off track but there's enough for a general fandom consensus and it really kind of has two parts
why these people are in a death game, and why the death game is happening at all
for the first one, it's implied that they were literally born for this. they've been monitored their whole lives so that completely realistic ai could be made of them to run test simulations for the death games
the group behind this, Asunaro, is explicitly stated to run an orphanage, and at least three of the characters are adopted
they're in the death game because they exist to be in the death game
and they have no idea, because there's a guy who can erase memories on the payroll
he got them to sign contracts agreeing to give themselves to asunaro (in other words unknowingly consent to the death game) in return for a wish, wiping their memories of THAT
the oldest of them is 30, which means this has been planned for three decades
so why is this organization doing this utterly batshit thing?
this is where it starts getting murkier and i feel we'll have our minds blown by the last chapter
but in the 80s, the government started cracking down on yakuza gangs
i love thats the backstory i love thats the backstory its llike SUCH A DUMB DOMINO EFFECT
(which is true irl, actually, it's why they've started to move more into things like trafficing and cybercrime apparently)
IT REALLY IS
FOR WANT OF A NAIL
this cracking down placed a lot of stress on the gangs, and bloody turf wars and fights over dwindling territory and power flared up
however, realising this would end up with them all killing each other and then becoming sitting ducks, the remaining gangs decided on a compromise
they would all put forward representatives, who would kill each other in a highly ritualised setting, and the winner would head the new, unified yakuza
in other words, a death game
the results became known as the Hades Incident to the police; a pun on the criminal 'underworld' in english, and I think it's a pun on reaching heaven in japanese, which explains why everyone keeps going upwards as the game progresses, anyway
so the yakuza have a new leader! hooray! aaaaand, he's traumatized
in a memorandum he describes how he was initially dismissive of one of the fellow victims, a high school girl who was picked for a game of russian roulette and who lost two people in a trial
then they talked, and whatever the conversation contained, he came to wish her to win, even at the cost of his own life.... but she died
he gets really fixated with this girl, the center of his trauma and fascination
She died. / It was the first time I'd shed tears for a stranger. / Even now, I see hallucinations of her. / As many women as I try to love, I'm never satisfied. / Even now, to me, she is
anyway you can tell this dude was not getting anything resembling therapy, because while Asunaro began to prosper and expand, even infiltrating the police and government and creating various profitable front businesses.... like the orphanage.... and the medical company.....
it was getting really into the idea of making ai and incredibly realistic lifelike dolls to put them in
for 'mental relief'.... implied to be a way to bring your loved ones back
shin where are your parents
he has them! apparently! we don't know if they're his biological ones, but we know at some point they gave his biological sister to be adopted by a different family, so it's a little(?) more likely thank the others
he mentions at some point he feels like they spoil him a little, and that he wants to repay them, iirc, although that's the extent we know
where was i... my thoughts... annie obliterated them with a tag
anyway the tl;dr is that it's implied that THIS death game is a guy recreating his trauma so that he can finally find someone like the person he lost and also a successor
damn thats convoluted i love it tbh
why cant we ever have a death game for a NORMAL reason
just a normal good clean fun wholesome death game
it's pretty clear that a) sara is meant to be the replacement for the high school girl, down to her name
picks sara up and puts her on a high shelf where she is safe
her predecessor was from the Sendou family, and another way you can read 'sen', thousand, is 'chi'. Chi dou in
yeah god that's the mood interestingly
and

that while the game is ostensibly fair, she's still sort of being rooted for to win
it's highly implied she's been subtley groomed to be
very good at death game
it's less clear, but still sort of there, that shin is meant to be a stand in for the Asunaro CEO himself
this is what happens when you're a self insert OC of someone who utterly hates themself
yeah this definitely isnt fucked up at all
picks shin up and also puts him on the high shelf
the longer you think about it the more fucked up it gets it just doesn't stop
this is the guy you can see the resemblence a bit
hi there not-ichihara-touma
but yeah you can see why shin wanted to kill the man the instant ranger gave him the last piece of lore he needed to piece it together
they're on the high shelf :' ) they're safe(ish) in yogen
i'm constantly

that being in a school where ppl die every month is
better for them
at least in some respects
looks at my own characters too like........................ yeah
LOOK... ITS FINE. THE MURDERS ARE OPTIONAL.
actually thats kind of worse since its not like people are forced to murder theyre just, yknow, given incentive to murder
because yttd like... because of what's going on in the larger picture it makes even escaping the death game nailbiting bc like... do they go home... asunaro knows where they live. the police are in on it
annie and i have a whole au and the theme song is Somebody's Watching Me by Rockwell
hhhhh yeah.... it also makes them a lot more unpredictable
in a yttd death game unless someone does something buckwild (and that's happened in the sims apparently), the deaths are set in games
yogen be like no one HAS to murder you can totally make it the whole year without ANY murders!!!
and then we have a 9 body pileup because 3 murderers showed up on the same night
sdfgfdfgffggfd mom said it was my turn on the murder
whose turn is it to die...
okay so the title of the game has it's whole translator note, because in japanese it's 'kimi ga shine', roughly 'you go die' which vgperson was originally going to translate as 'die, my dear' bc kimi is a very familiar 'you' but i'm glad they went with Your Turn To Die because it just... resonates with the game's themes well
but as i had a lot of fun pointing out in nms watch, it's effectively like.... 'go die' or 'go fuck yourself' or 'perish'.... that sort of thing
it gets title dropped twice in the game
the first time is shin to sara
his usage is interesting because 'it's your turn to die... miss sara'
is something that makes a LOT more sense when you find out that he was told about the simulations, in which sara had the highest chance of winning and him the lowest at 0%
so when he says it's her turn to die.... this gives it an added hidden 'instead of him'
the second use is keiji to shin, and it's pretty clearly keiji turning shin's own words back at him
who's turn is it to die? we don't know, and we are terrified. there are five people alive in one route, and four in the other, and i am not ready
me actually looking the game up proper finally like oh i somehow didnt even realize this was an indie rpgmaker game ITS LITERALLY STILL ONGOING? damn rip u ppl
it's literally ALL BY ONE GUY
THE ART LOOKS SO GOOD I LEGIT THOUGHT IT WAS JUST AESTHETIC...... impressive tbh
the next chapter will be the last one, unless it's split up homestuck style again
IKR and the music is banging too
the art, music and character writing are
and it's free to play wiggles eyebrows
how its available in browser so u dont even have to download
sighs..... puts down a bookmark...................
yeeeeep
sdghgf as long as it hasn't updated and everyone's crashing the site trying to see at once
hehehehe
some indie game makers rly need to charge more for their games fr
lemme know your thoughts if you do play
THEY REALLY DO
I KEEP TRYING TO BUY MERCH BUT IT'S HARD
i probably will because i know it has AI Things and thats my ultimate weakness in any story
i think bunny mentioned it's fairly common for rpg maker games like this to be released piecemeal free and then sold once they're complete
tbh that kinda makes sense because if they charge you for it at the very end u have to pay to get the ending and what are u gonna do, NOT see the conclusion
heheheheh honestly god i love yttd taking off the mask like
brian david gilbert voice surprise! i lured you into a false sense of security! i'm actually sci fi!
they already gave u the rest for FREE u monster
anyway you wanted to know why the cool robot people are fucked up it's bc they're made by asunaro which is evil found family where everyone is awful and making each other worse
picks all of them up and puts them on the high shelf too
but maybe like, with a lil divider in the middle, from the sounds of things
asdfgdfg yeah it's like making sure you keep certain pet types from interacting
Yeah, so that's been the trend more recently. A lot of indie makers will release it for free, and then spruce it up a little bit and sell it (or just put it up for sale as a way of getting support.) Not all of them do it but it is really clever since otherwise it's really hard to get people to drop cash on any one specific game.
But I love all of this headcanon... Not to make this about me, but I feel very validated right now because your more general ideas of how their relationship was is almost an exact match for how I'd pinned it down so we on the same wavelength.
I definitely see Midori as the type who really does just creep up on you, and by time you have the opportunity to realize it, you're already in too deep. Because he's your support and your friend and he gaslights and manipulates and acts... But I love all of these specifics, A++, would kill him again
quietly adopts some of this for my own nefarious purposes
hehehehe that validates me as well honestly
yeesssss lemme know any of your own as you like, it's fun to sort of like
build up a rolodex of moments because so much is implied but not gone into
fghgfddfg shredder time
