I felt bad because it's my mom's birthday and I could barely enjoy the restaurant we went out to

you know I don't feel good when I turn down creme brulee and cupcakes (that I specifically bought for myself, to boot)

(we usually do a tiny cake but the grocery store didn't have any and I went cupcakes)

ANYWAY I watched Ecanto

I enjoyed it, it was a cute movie

I feel a bit bad because it was definitely one of those movies that got bogged down by hype so that affected my viewing a bit

everything felt like it was speeding through every scene, if that makes sense, and it was such a deep movie with great ideas I wished it just slowed down a little bit

even though the movie was apparently 2 hours, it felt shorter

that said Luisa is bae

you support luisa, therefore you got the most important part of the movie

I supported Luisa the first time I saw a photo of her and the movie only deepened my support

I really would have loved to have seen Mirabel appreciate her sisters and vice versa a bit slower to make it more meaningful instead of "all our years resentment is solved by the end of a 3 minute song."

(obviously that one more aimed at Isabella)

Luisa is the best

the book explains it a bit better imo since you get to see all three sisters' POVs, but also it didn't like...fix everything. the time it takes to fix the house is what really helps them heal. the song reconciliations are just the starts of it and that's why luisa and isabella are so easily drawn back when abuela flips on mirabel.

the final song was also supposed to be over 7 minutes and involve a lot more detail into the family healing and working through their issues together but you know, disney wasn't having that and cut it down

I was really shocked when I saw the movie was just under 2 hours on the menu screen because it felt like it flew by

i think that is because of how much they wanted to put in but also i think it's kind of the nature of having your protag be someone with No Fucking Chill

(Also scrolling through the available movies to see if something else catches my attention has reminded me that Jungle 2 Jungle and Man of the House were 2 completely separate movies that my mind has combined into one thanks to JTT in one and Tim Allen in the other and them both having white people dress as native Americans for no reason)

like mirabel is full tilt running almost the whole movie in everything she does

she really is

she's a great character but she never had time to breathe, literally or figuratively

i don't think she takes time to breathe. like it's not in her character. she throws herself into things wholeheartedly and with full energy and doesn't really slow down

she and luisa are similar in that way except luisa wants to slow down and mirabel seems like to have no idea that her slowing down is even something she should want

she was leroy jenkins-ing the madrigals into self-awareness and therapy

(Also with all the crappy mid-90s Disney Channel original movies on here, I'm shocked they didn't put in the Escape from Witch Mountain remake with Erik Von Detten that I was convinced I hallucinated as a child but IMDB assures me is real)

some of those they aren't allowed to put on yet

(that dude was everywhere in Disney stuff in the late 90s/early 00s and then just vanished)

Pacing issues and not slowing down have been my issue with most Disney movies the last few years. Haven’t checked this one out yet for fear of it. Worth it?

yeah I'm annoyed lmao, I'm alternating between "hey you didn't eat a full dinner" and "how dare you put any food in your mouth"

okay so some thoughts that I have after sitting on this for a bit

so Delores is shown to be a massive gossip who can't keep a secret, and yet kept the reveal a secret for like over a decade?

how the hell does anyone actually sleep in their rooms? I saw the beds, but nothing looks remotely comfortable

it seems super horrible that when Mirabel didn't get a door they didn't bother to convert an actual room into her bedroom and just left her in the room meant for children

they couldn't have given her a space to call her own, especially after Antonio was born?

other than the interrupted event, why the hell does Isabella hate Mirabel so much? it's briefly mentioned in her song but honestly it seems like Mirabel has spent many years actively avoiding her that it rang a little hollow

also, seeing how everyone in the town seems to go out of their way to inadvertently our otherwise remind Mirabel she has no gift, the children in the beginning are the biggest assholes in the movie unless they are toddlers who just learned how to talk, have amnesia, or just moved to town

the kids are 5. they are antonio's age. also isabella doesn't hate mirabel. the irony of the movie is that isabella is frustrated with mirabel a lot but mirabel is the one who trash-talks isabella to like three separate people throughout the movie

mainly isabella is just frustrated by the way she thinks mirabel's obsession with proving herself seems to sabotage things unintentionally and she just wants her to get in line essentially like she feels she's had to do her whole life. like a "why can't you accept things like we've had to and stop causing trouble trying to change it?"

while also being jealous of her freedom to do whatever she wants unlike her and luisa.
