it has done so much damage
Declarations of war are usually frowned upon in polite companies.

well I frown upon people treating "society" like their big brother who won't stay on his side of the couch
from the paper I'm reading right now: "In the current world we live in, stereotypes play a role in how a person is identified" KILL IT WITH FIRE
dang society getting all up on the couch
Society withered my crops
society is stealing my chips
Society keeps poking me but I told society to stop poking me MOOOOOOOOOM
'in the current world we live in' made me cringe a little
yeah these kids had a pandemic through their junior and senior high school years and learned 0 things
I'm basically trying to drag sophomores through college-level composition this year and it is rough going
well, you know, we do live in a society
Society, stay on your side of the room
mom tried to put me in a get along shirt with Society and I'm still traumatized
Society and The Media threw my books in the garbage
bumping this to add "Kamala Khan, a Muslim Pakistani-American teenager from New Jersey, is referred to as Ms. Marvel. Ms. Marvel is a 16-year-antique lady juggling excessive school, own circle of relatives, and her new superpowers. "
I don't know what that was supposed to be, but I do know autocorrect was involved
MS MARVEL IS AN ANTIQUE LADY
looool sounds like they were finding and replacing with the thesaurus
Sixteen year old antique lady
16-year-old... what's another word for old? Antique!
also in this essay, "In today’s society Majority of Americans experience that faith is dropping its impact on human beings. "
there is such a canyon between how this person speaks and how they write. Incredibly articulate in person, barely literate on paper
now i'm really curious if someone has done an actual study on popular phrases used in essay writing
bc i bet it changes over time
oh, it absolutely does. there are standardized ways of teaching concepts, and the standards change over time
like over the last few years, it's become really common to introduce citation in high school by giving people a general introductory phrase. So like four years ago, all of a sudden all my C-tier students start every essay with "In [title] by [author's name], it states [quote]"
which chaps my ass because it's fucking redundant
just say "[author] states [quote]"
but they learned it one way, and goddamn it they are going to do it exactly that way every time
the hardest part for me in writing essays was that I had a HS teacher who said "pretend I don't know anything about the topic and explain it to me"
college essays don't quite work that way
I can see how that's useful, but I can also see how that leads to someone being like "Let me explain to you how the Big Bang worked and eventually we'll start talking about the problem of race in 1960s America"
I'm normally against the idea of curves but this semester most of my students are so incoherent that if I didn't grade on a curve then no one would pass
I feel bad for this group because there's also a lot of shame attached to their writing? Like we had great class conversations but then nobody submitted written work
and I kept having to be like "guys, you need to write in your writing class wtf"
I think they just didn't want me to see it and think less of them or something
I definitely had to send more than one email today that was like "I don't want to submit a failing grade for you so I'm going to enter an Incomplete. Now please give me a realistic date when I can expect your missing work

"
which is not a luxury I extend to the classes that aren't my favorite
(I'm grading Bad Class after this and I cannot wait to start dishing out Fs over there)

Fs for FUN
I hope I can fail them this time! last semester, this uni wouldn't let me enter failing grades for comp1 and I had to just forcibly withdraw people who didn't pass
so I can wreck their financial aid but not their GPA
not as fun when I don't like someone
well that sounds completely unsatisfying
taking away one of the things that gets me through the rough spots!
I cling to the knowledge I get the last laugh after they've been awful bullies to me for sixteen weeks
withdrawing them is barely a chuckle
and is more likely to end in a series of dramatic appeals
i, too, wish to be an antique lady
"Kamala’s father is being hard, stubborn, and emotional volatile to Kamala because he is blinded by his male Muslim tradition as a father to be dangerous and emotionally volatile to get his daughter kamala to obey and hold her back to protect her from going outside at night were anything could happen to Kamala as a sixteen-year-
old Muslim girl trying to go to a part where there are other boys and alcohol present."
Ms Marvel papers always bring out the racism
misunderstanding a feminist source
I'm familiar with the OG article -- it's critiquing the way Kamala's father is portrayed in the art as falling into the stereotype of the angry brown man
but my incel, missing the point, thinks it's talking about how men are angry and dangerous
" Kamala at first wanted to follow people like Zoe and go to the Waterfront to fit, but her
father denies her and follows his male Muslim tradition as a father demands for Kamala to go
back to her room. Kamala rejects her ethnicity and disobeys her father to go to the waterfront to
fit in and try to be “normal” for once. "
did. did he not read the WHOLE book
did he try to write a research paper on issue one
OH WELL incel gets a C for the course at least he passes legitimately and doesn't put me through the crisis of trying to fudge anything
is he trying to give answers he thinks a feminist would accept? That is multiple levels of yeah
