Because I only make good decisions
He's gonna be from the New Teen Titans: Games oneshot because that's the best version of him
Yeeeeaaah. Games made me really like this character. I bought it for Joey but ended up really liking Danny.
I will desperately try to get over my prejudice
You don't have to, I know he's annoying XD He reminds me a lot of Damian, only he didn't get the chance for like, you know, character growth.
LOLbut he doesn’t know my characters so he deserves a shot
True true! Hopefully he won't blow it. Another reason I wanted to take him from Games is he's at least TRYING to be less abrasive by the end of it, so there's that.
Reading over the Joker thread and I'm vibrating wishing I had apped Danny earlier.
Like, I know Danny's reaction to Jason dying felt cold as shit but like...it's insinuated they had SOME KIND of off-panel friendship going on. He sat alone with the information that his only friend his own age was likely dead, for over a week,
And the first thing we see Danny doing after he's kicked off the Titans is joining a gang supposedly headed by the Joker in hopes of getting to him.
And like...all I'm saying is, I don't think it's a coincidence that Jason got killed by the Joker, and then suddenly Danny has a vendetta against the clown, and chose him as the first villain to take down on his own without the Titans knowing about it.
Ooh. I need to read this one-shot and double check who Jason knows from the Titans. As a kid, he didn't have a lot of friends his age who were also vigilantes
I would love to throw mine at him altho joker's gonna be like "who?" and Kon might think he's kind of an annoying nerdy dead guy but hunter maybe might be friends
I'm not even sure most people know Jason and Danny knew each other, it's such a brief mention
This is litteraly the only nod to it that we get
Jason's time with the Titans was brief. Donna bought him in, along with a few others when Dick and others were occupied by a mission in space
And Jason had to tell Donna to stop thinking he's like Dick
Kon would just be like whispering to robin and bart like "Wasn't he supposedly the really, really annoying one?"
"That Beast Boy, like, tried to be nice about because he was super dead but you can tell still kinda hated his guts?"
angriestbird: What coincidence, Danny also found out jason died while they were on a mission in spcae!
korel: Danny: "Wait, he's back to being Beast Boy? Shouldn't he be in twenty's now?"
"nah that's gar" gets a flat look because only they're allowed to think gar is annoying, they're his friend.
And it's not like they SAY it
Plus he and raven are the only older titans that didn't ditch them
Goddamn space missions. It's why Dick didn't get involved with Death in the Family
Danny had to deal with Gar durring his deeply masoginistic/creepy perve era and he's been calling him out of it sinc ethe 80's.
The older titans were very all "titans together - oh wait, the other titans are forming a teen byeeee" eventually so
that is a thing that needs to be called out
I mean if Kon found that out he'd be like "yeeeah guys should definitely be called out about that kind of things" while rubbing his neck awkwardly
Fortunately kon was a good kid tho he sort of worked his own way out of that phase (mostly) by the cadmus era and only had minor slips like thinking he could take wonder girl in a fight when she was like amazon trained
I do love their dynamic though, and this is such a good moment for Gar
korel: I forgot Kon used to think he could take Wonder Girl, like, boy you funny.
She threw him immediately on his ass tho he blasted her out of the base but then the fight apparently tore up all of outside
Tim would be very prim about explaining who Danny Chase was from the records he’s read. But judgey about the lack of code name
angriestbird: The titans (and Young Justice) really need to stop going to space, it never seems to end well for them.
SeeMarieRun: He got a code name...eventually. And then he died
Love that Slo-bo knew off that bat to put his money on Cassie
they both have powers but she has waaay more actual fight training
anyway I think he'd find danny a little annoying because of some of the stuff I've seen but there's room to grow there
idk if he still does his too cool for school thing
It’s been awhile since I read the Wolfman Perez run, but didn’t he actively reject the idea at first?
Danny is def not the easyest to get along with, I expect him to grate on a lot of nerves
Anyone thinking they're too cool for costumed heroics doesn't really fly with him
SeeMarieRun: Oh YEAH. He was full brat mode about it. He only took on Phantasm because he absolutly had to.
He had a hard job being Gar’s foil and likeable and in the end failed the other one.
I mean his biological dad is superman like the poster boy for costumed sincerity
Honestly, if he’d been on one of Tim’s teams, I think Tim would’ve tried to remove him after he cut his knee and ran away crying
I like this tho bc they're a great group of people to be around tho
You have to be able to deal with things even if you’re not used to them.

b ) sort of used to dealing with people that annoy them
korel: -wiggly hand gesture- eehhhh, he got pretty humbled about that more than once so it won't be AS bad. He'd probably poke fun occationaly more out of habbit then out of malice.
bart drove tim and kon nuts sometimes and he was their bestie
Also the areas of like possible contention, like tim and danny being know it alls, Kon'd just be like "Boys boys you're both pretty" and would rib them if they tried to beef
SeeMarieRun: Yeah Marve wasn't great at hitting that balence, and he didn't really give fans much to like about him before showing what a brat he could be. His most likelable issue was arguably the issue where he was alone with Joey.
"he's a know-it-all, you say, Tim?"
Bart drove them nuts sometimes but was also fun, nice, and occasionally sweet.
Like I think Kon would be apt to give someone he is driven nuts by a chance
he was friends with them but they drove him slightly crazy between tim being dire serious and bart being bart
korel: "You're both pretty" XD
But he'd also be like "wow way to be a tool" just as easily
Tim: I’m a know-it-all on strike from telling people I know it all.
korel: I think that's why the Titans kept him around as long as they did "we were all that age once"
15 now, but I think he was either 13 or 14 when he was brought on.
So he was like, the only kid of a team of 18-22 year olds, which also didn't help his case. He just...DIDN'T fit the group dynamic. It was jarring
13, I remember that. And yeah Joey and Dick were the babies of that group. There wasn’t anyone under 18
I think there'd be a little "he's only fifteen" plus he did save raven
Oh damn! I though Gar was still 18
You can’t put an 8th grader with college students and expect it to work
yeeeaaah. IO think it was semi mandated or something so they could keep the TEEN in teen titans but like...
Skittering_Roach: I forget which issue it is, but Joey’s IDed as being younger than Dick who was the youngest. Gar might also be, and just be a month or two older?
I think Danny is a good character shoved onto a team he didn't belong on. He needed kids his own age to bounce off of. Having a 13 yearold talking down to grown ass adulty is just OOF
Kids the same age also can roast you until you stop being a dick bc there's no power imbalance
If was also late in the run, and Wolfman has expressed regret about a number of things he did towards the end because he was running out of ideas
Lioke what happened to Slobo in Young Justice
like at most if gar was on the younger end he was the only one who COULD be petty at him
(Not saying Danny is a bad idea - just that the age difference was)
in this case some of the titans there are slightly older cool kids but also not super much older
korel: and yeah, I think that's why he had Gar and Danny butting heads the most...that and Gar just being 80's Gar
Kon is fine with lightly roasting a slightly younger teen in a not overly cruel way
Also it was tell and not show. We’re told he’s a super spy with huge awesome powers and all this government work
SeeMarieRun: 100%! And then you don't really get to see that at play until Games or when he's Phantasm and it's too late by that point
It frustrates me to no end that Marv held out on actually making Danny interesting until after the fans had decided they hated him.
DC still hadn’t fully learned the lesson of Jason Todd
They really haven't. I'm glad they at least eventually got better with Damian because he was on his way to Danny Chase statuse.
You have to intro new young characters carefully
damian needed to have a heart much earlier I think
That's the big issues with surrounding characters like that with people that are all heart
eventually with damian tho you get him allowing softness into his life by collecting a million pets and having a good genuine relationship with dick and being humanized by Jon
Some people like Damian, IDK. I think you’re right though
he may be bad at showing it but he does love and he just battles a dark nature he was taught to have while trying to adhere to morals he doesn't quiet understand and there's a lot of toxicity around him SHOWING vulnerability
bc he was taught that is a big nono
know it all characters need their moment by the fire talking about how they'd love to stop being a superhero because it meant the world was peaceful and people had finally stopped hurting each other
Agreed. I wish Danny had gotten some moments like that. We get his time with Joey but it was in a shitty book going over that characters back stories that no one probably read. And then we got Danny having a panic attack over getting his knee split open which just made him come off even more annoying.
Like, on a character levbel I think that moment is interesting when lines up with other things we know about him, but it sure doesn't make him sympathetic the way I think Marv thought it did.
i mean that makes him seem not ready for a superhero team
And he already didn't feel like he belonged there
Yeah, that's the scene I was talking about
Especially when you combo that overreaction to how he acted about Jason's death
it's a little kid reaction which like...he's young
but its at odds with an experienced super team
It's kind of a rookie level freak out that would work on a rookie team of teens
Suuuuper late here but I finally read the one-shot! What a ride.
And yeah, the only mentions about Danny and Jason knowing each other are the ones you bought up already, namely that it's only post-death that tidbit is bought up
But I'm up to play it as Jason and Danny didn't get to know each other well but could've it been a good friendship that got cut short. Their ages being close to each other likely helped
I'm down for that! I wish we got to see at least some of their friendship on panel. Kinda wonder if we were going to get that if Jason hadn't died and that was just a nod to that.
And yee! I'm glad you got to see the one shot, it IS a hell of a ride.
It's weirdly dorky but kinda cute in an outdated slangy way that Danny called Jason "Toddster." Jason probably rolled his eyes at first but liked Danny enough to not stop him
Robin!Jason apparently also got on readers' nerves. Partially because he wasn't Dick. Supposedly some DC staff didn't like him either. So when the death vote happened and they killed him off, DC were then surprised by the backlash
Yes, that's adorable! He's still totally going to call him that.
And yeah, DC often seems to be out of touch when it comes to how fans really feel about a character. and it blows my mind that Jason went from "the Robin no one liked" to one of the most beloved Bat-Family members. Even with DC staff themselves.
Awww. Jason will feel a little nostalgic. He didn't make a lot of superhero/sidekick friends when he was Robin
The final tally for the death vote was close too. 72 vote difference between if he should live or die. (Note: International readers didn't get to vote and it was a short window)
Same with Danny. I'm pretty sure Jason was the only friend Danny had that was his own age
Oof, the more I learn about that poll the more is sounded like it was a totally shit show
Awwww. I can see how they could've started becoming friends. Jason was pen pals with Kid Devil too
And in retrospect, yeah. It sounds like the the vote was a mess. There's also been an unproven rumor that the result was partially thanks to someone programming his computer to keep dialing the "no" phone number
Yeeesss! I love that Jason and Kid Devil were pen pales. Having the three of them hang out could have been a fun comic.
I wouldn't be shocked in that happened, knowing how some comic fans can be, but it sounds like it already was pretty mishandled from the start.
With a good friend, having all three of them would've been cute! Jason never got a team of his own until way after post-death. He never went beyond a Titan reserve
DC: Let's do an event to have more fan engagement. People seem to have a problem with our current Robin so let's have them decide what should happen to him
Limited pool of readers with some of them being very salt and petty: /votes for a dead Robin
DC:
wish I'd had the gumption to do more
and oh my god, yeah. That sounds like typical DC tbh. Hell of a choice to make their first poll of this kind one where fans get to decide if a kid side-kick gets to die brutally on panel.
Apparently the thinking was they wanted a decision that would have teeth and unforgettable. Mission accomplished maybe a little TOO well there...
