So, I've been rereading bits of Danny's run with the Titans. Went back to the issues where he went after the Joker + The Royal Flush Gang, and I sure am glad I did.
Because apparently, Danny had no clue The Joker was actually running the RFG at the time and I just forgot that. He was just going after RFG and "lucked" into the Joker.
And that's just so...frustrating.
Like, this is what I mean when I talk about how it feels like every opportunity to have this kid have some meaningful development or character moments was just squandered in his main continuity.
Because, how do you make it an accident that he ran into the dude that killed his only friend? Even if he did just stumble into him, you would think he would at least have some kind of visceral reaction to running into him. But NOPE
Bart Allen gets a more meaningful run in with the Joker that actually references Jason, and Bart didn't even know Jason existed before that day
Like, how? How do you not play with that?! There's so much you can do with it! I'm frustrated AS A WRITER.
It could have been such a cool character moment and a good opportunity to actually dive into the friendship we never got to see on panel.
It also could have been such a good way to finally endear him to readers.
Of course, it was a guest writer working on these issues and not Marv Wolfman, so maybe that's part of the reason why we didn't get more depth out of Danny for this.
But, it's still frustrating.
And I WILL play with that idea even if the comics didn't.
Not gonna say he went after the Joker on purpose. But he damn well should have had deeper feelings on that than "cool I'm gonna take him down and rub it in the Titan's smug faces".
Oh oof.... Also, I didn't know about the Bart Allen run-in. That's pretty surprising too
oh my god, Bart meeting the Joker was -chefs kiss-, if I have time when i get home, I'll post some panels because they're amazing
But Joker brings up killing Jason to try and scare Bart
But most of the book is Bart continuing his pattern of making Gotham Villains even more insane
Yeah. I had Bart's reaction in game to Joker showing up was a comment on needing to stock up on wind-up novelties...
Oh yes. The joys of writers who don't check the background of characters they're using to figure out how what they're going to do will make the character feel.
<still fucking side eyes Austen>
Bugly42: oh my god, that's perfect!
One never knows when a flood of waddling duckies and chattering teeth comes in handy...
litshard: It's not as bad as all of Flash: Fastest Man Alive, or Young Justice Dark Crisis at least. There's definitely been worse moments of that, but it's still annoying.
The pains of being a comic book fan T-T
Time for scans!
Those are some of the best pages, but the whole things is really good
Impulse is the best Flash for a reason. Accept no imitation.
And they mostly miss what makes him great in all the media adaptations...
yep! I mean, I still haven't gone back to the Flash tv show to see how they treat him there, but the others ones have all missed the mark. (I liked YJ Bart as his own character. But that still wasn't really a good adaptation of Bart)
