I've already been on a whole year about Nope getting ignored despite being STUNNING, despite INVENTING A NEW CAMERA to shoot it
Everyone in this movie was STUNNING, but obviously Viola Davis was absolutley killing it. she deserved a best actor nomination at least
Also I didnt know John Boyega was in it until we were watching and he was so amazing....I dont want to say scene stealing because I think it was impossible to steal scenes from the women in this movie but he had such PRESENCE
Thuso Mbedu in the lead was great
too, she has so much charisma and I hope we get to see a lot more of her
extremely gorgeous movie too...I keep thinking about the colors and how beautiful and well crafted it was. I'm mad I didnt see it in theaters! I really wanted to and it just didnt work out
It had the feel of just those well made, well produced and executed historical action pieces that were so in vogue in the 90s/2000s (thanks Ridley Scott) but with the added enjoyment of being about a niche historical event you dont really see in movies and also with a lot of care and interest in the historical honestly of it
like i'm so torn between FUCK OSCARS THEY DON'T MEAN SHIT ANYMORE but also
IT'S SOOOO STUPID THAT THIS DIDN'T GET ANY?? THIS IS EXACTLY THE KIND OF MOVIE THEY LOVE (except for the)
LMAO YEAH ITS KIND OF COMPLICATED RIGHT
I mean Nope AND TWK getting completely ignored feels....mmm
it feels like they think they already gave get out one so they're done now LMAO
I mean it still boggles the mind that a black woman hasn't won an oscar since Haley Berry in....2001 or something like that?
Did Avatar 2 really deserve a best picture nomination over this?
did it NEED a best picture nominaiton?
omg I had to look up what movie won best costuming and I have to leave
yeah, like, i'm sure the costuming in that movie is incredible too but the fact that it won and woman king was not even nominated is such
'there can't be two' riggery
and also 'real african horrors + history aren't as marketable as fantasy africa'
it's truly so weird it didn't get ANYTHING
not even a nom for viola davis??
yeah....like it's not that I think Wakanda Forever doesnt deserve anything noms, it's just kind of crazy that TWK was shut out so completely
Oh Viola Davis deserved a nomination 100%
YEAH, like knowing how much effort they put into researching and representing this very specific time period and culture
it does make it feel like that's less worthy of acknowledgement and interest than a completely fantasy world
when theres no reason BOTH couldnt be nominated
i think it's probably much easier for the ahem ahem demographics that make up the Academy
to enjoy a movie where they don't have to witness the horror of slave trading Europeans infiltrating african communities and pitting them against each other to aid in their human stealing
like i have not seen the black panther movies, i do believe they hit on racism from killmonger in the first one (tho he's the villain i think, i'm not sure how that plays out, I ONLY KNOW FROM RP LMAO)
and it's not like all black stories need to be ABOUT racism
but i do think there are stories a lot easier for white people to feel comfortable watching and i don't think The Woman King is that story, and that is telling
also the double whammy of being about women and directed by a woman
