It’s dim in the bedroom; the fire in the broad fireplace is burned down to embers, and there are no lanterns lit. There don’t need to be, for witchers. But the dimness and the warmth and the quiet granted by thick stone walls make the moment seem almost dreamlike, somehow unreal.

“Lam?” Aiden asks softly.

Lambert reaches down, hand coming to rest slowly and almost hesitantly on Aiden’s cheek. “I won’t ever hurt you, or fuck you over,” he says, quiet and fierce. “Fucking never, alright? And if you think I’m gonna then you gotta fucking tell me, you asshole.”

Aiden swallows hard against the sudden lump in his throat. “I should’ve trusted you,” he says, just as quietly. “I do trust you.” They’ve saved each other’s lives a dozen times over the years, slept under each other’s protection and drunk each other’s potions and guarded each other’s backs. Aiden does trust Lambert, with everything he is. “I just…”

He trails off, and looks down at his hands. “Just got too tangled up in bad memories,” he says at last.

Aiden startles a little. “That’s...normal, then? Sleeping on the hearth in a pile?”

“Yep,” Lambert says.

“Puppy piles,” Jaskier says, chuckling. Geralt makes a sort of grumpy noise. Jaskier giggles. “Yes, yes, mighty and majestic White Wolf, definitely not a cuddly puppy, how could I have made such a dreadful mistake.”
