what a problem to have: how to get the abhorrent stench of Febreeze out of my living room, when having the patio door open all day didn't help

oof gross
Gemini

to be fair, I never use it for this reason

don't give me "Febreeze doesn't have a smell it eliminates smells" bullshit, it has a SMELL

but last night Oliver destroyed his litter box so thoroughly that we actually needed it
Lauren
oh my god who would say it doesn't have a smell
Lauren

the smell burns my nose
Lauren
... but fair reason to use it
Gemini

right?? ugh
Gemini
so now I'm sitting here going, why hasn't the smell dissipated after a day with an open patio door and 70 degree weather?
Gemini
oh well. we have 4 more days of near-80 temps, I'll just hope that keeping the door open will eventually work
Lauren
I don't know what else you'd be able to do, so let's hope
Gemini

yeah, exactly
Gemini

at least I have no actual sewing to do this week so I can go outside and do my yard shit
Gemini
completely unfucked the back yard today, including pulling invasives, tomorrow I can get all the pumice stones cleared away and maybe work on making a flagstone path along the side of the house
Gemini
the previous owners had flagstone everywhere, I've been digging up and moving them out but they're big and heavy so they'd do well just being relocated to a little path
Lauren
oh nice free flagstone lmao
Gemini

I have made the most of free garden supplies left by the last owners lmao
Gemini

except their love of hostas. ugh.
People think it doesn't have a smell? Wtf.
Gemini
some people do. I feel like many of them have never actually used febreeze but just saw the commercials
Gemini
then again, I saw one recently that swore it didn't have a scent and I was all BULLSHIT YOU DON'T
febreeze makes me actually ill, I had to tell Clara when she was using it on her dry-clean-only blazers for her travel job she had to wait and use it at the hotel
I would say try a spray bottle of white vinegar? that gets everything else out
Gemini
the older stuff definitely also made me sick.
Gemini

HMM
Gemini

once the cats have fucked off somewhere else I might. I don't need them breathing vinegar fumes
yeah that'll burn your nose hairs but at least it dissipates lmao
Gemini
you say that like I still have any nose hairs
AFTER THE FEBREEZE THAT'S FAIR
one single application of white vinegar removed all traces of "this definitely came from a smoking home" from a particleboard desk rescued from next to student housing dumpsters, so since 2009 it's my first line of offense for everything
Gemini

hot damn

I know the go-tos are vinegar and vodka but we don't have vodka at the moment
Gemini
I only drink rum lmao
lmao legit, I only ever have vodka in the house for cooking
Gemini
we haven't had vodka in the house since well before the pandemic, because that was the last time we had a party
I'll drink just about anything else but vodka tastes like acetone smells

I developed a taste for shochu in Japan and I'm mad that I can't get it here. at least, not at Woodman's liquor dept.
Gemini
may have to go to a specialty liquor store wth lots of imports
shochu is pretty good yeah
umeshu is the shit
Gemini
omg it so is, and Rose fell in love with it but the only plum wines I can easily find is the cheap rot-gut shit
Gemini
I guess we just have classy booze tastes that can only be satisfied by finding a weird shop. or maybe the big asian market that can afford the liquor license
choya is my fave, if you go somewhere with variety, get the big jar with the whole plums in it
the plums alone will fuck you up
it's dirt cheap but it's extremely yummy
Gemini

better than umeboshi lmao

I finally had one in Japan and it was very much "hmm I was right, this is a NO."

HOKAY kitties went upstairs with mommy, I can spritz some vinegar and hope it works
Gemini

had to double dose already, it works for a bit but not enough. and now they're both back, Sadie's in her box an Oliver is trying to eat my hand

I wonder if Nature's Miracle would eat Febreeze...
which exact Febreeze product did you use? I might be able to punch this with chemistry
Gemini
it was an air thing for the bathroom, hang on...
Gemini

febreeze air effects with lavender scent (ugh)
Gemini
idefk where it came from, maybe the house owners left it 10 years ago when we moved in and we never use it so...
there is Hydrogenated Castor Oil in it, so dawn dish soap might actually get the smell up
that's probably what makes it linger

"Tetramethyl Acetyloctahydronaphthalenes" is also a synthetic scent ingredient in the lavender scent that appears to be a long-lasting acetone, and the best way to get rid of acetone other than evaporation is absorbing it with clay kitty litter 8V
Gemini
lmao the kittty litter that caused the problem in the first place
Gemini
I think I finally got it after being a little more liberal with the vinegar spritz.
and yeah right? lmao
for future you, nature's miracle and citrus magic both make litter box deodorizers that don't rank the whole place up for hours
Gemini
man, Nature's Miracle hasn't done much for me overall. I got some for laundry to try to salvage some blankets but 3 washes hasn't been enough
ah okay yeah, it does depend on the cat. for laundry you might try enzymatic detergents meant for either horse gear or sports clothes
Gemini
oooh horse gear. that's hardcore
Gemini
if that doesn't work, nothing will!
Gemini
urine digester you say
it comes in a bunch of different scents too - some of the reviews say the original scent definitely smells like "just-cleaned public restroom"
Gemini
as long as there's a no-scent option. or I guess that would be close enough
yeah "original" or lemon are gonna be your most inoffensive probably
