WHICH ISN’T SUPER SPECIFIC; I subscribe to a very loose, free style form of planning character arcs and journeys
I like to have lots of pieces on the board so that i can move things in any number of directions based on what happens in the game, what happens with other characters etc
I never have a RIGID plan
I might have like, destinations on the map I want to get to, but not the route, and no timeline. Lots of room for pitstops and excursions
Like, INTERSTINGLY A BIG PART OF my initial, immediate goal in the game was that Finn canonically, fresh off of accidentally killing someone, was struggling with and completely unable to strike a killing blow against anyone or anything
And this got “resolved” on Alydhion, but in a really unexpected way, and mostly....incidentally. But in the process put Finn on a path towards wanting to do things other than...fight. Or at least kill. Hence why he starting learning things from Wei Wuxian about non-lethally being able to end a fight, or learning more about medicine from Bones
(All of which makes me happy because this is touched upon toward the end of canon and it’s something i can carry further which is something i enjoy doing in RP)
ANOTHER INTERESTING THING I’m enjoying playing with is Finn kind of learning to just be like, a regular human
I mean, I’ve talked a bit about how being around human beings who are more similar to himself (ie/ proactive and involved in the world) has been good for him
But like, i want to emphasize the....regular
Because Finn is SO surrounded, both in his own canon and here, in ximilia, by people who are in some way, extraordinary. People who are politically important, who are immortal, who have immense POWER, physical or magical
Finn is tangentially so ACCOSTOMED to those things they don’t even read as remarkable to him except in how they are unique to the individual
Finn does not have any special powers, or abilities and I’m not even remotely interested in him obtaining them (even things like learning magic, for instance, because that’s an incredibly loaded thing in his world. He respects people who use magic and magic like abilities a lot he just doesn’t have any interest in being one of those people)
Even Finn’s arm, which like, is by any modern acccount an extraordinarily effective prosthetic, is just pretty much regular and he refuses to use any of its special features. (Although Newt did hook him up with more USEFUL ones now, since PB really dropped the ball with useful arm functions)
But Finn is slowly starting to accept that he prefers not having the prosthetic
Which again, is something we know happens in canon, but mostly after the end, so its fun to play out the actual internal process of that
i must throw marta at him more

they can commiserate about being among gods
I mean, Finn’s ‘I need to help everyone, all the time’ is very at odds with him kind of learning that it’s like, okay. To just be a regular person, who isn’t responsible for everything and everyone
Finn comes from an absolutely WILD world, and has experienced some Deeply Crazy Shit
But at the end of the day beyond his experiences, he’s PRETTY MUCH JUST A REGULAR PERSON
its a lot to keep up with
come to your new regular non powered mom as well finn
the arc of a relative normie among a very powered cast is so interesting
I mean even narratively, Finn is like, ultimately not particular central or vital to the major conflicts of his story and world. Finn is virtually never the person to defeat the Big Bad Guy, it’s always someone or something else. Which is something I REALLY LIKE ABOUT HIM AND HIS STORY. I love playing protagonists who aren’t actually like.....special?
I think in the series finale, Finn keeps trying to solve the problem and has to literally get PUSHED away more than once, because he’s not the person needed
(It’s actually very funny that despite being a show geared towards kids, AT has very few child characters and completely rejects the idea that children should be the people to resolve the problems of adults)
Even Finn’s extremely well-meaning, BIG CHARACTER GROWTH choices to choose diplomacy and try and broker peace to avoid war are like. It’s good for HIM, from a personal angle to make the choice to take that path instead of violence.
But it doesn’t actually solve the problem because....Finn’s not capable on his own of just, solving the big diplomatic problems of the adults in his life.
Granted i took him from a canon point just before this so he hasn’t fully internalized it
But like, coming back to xim, the last two missions I have really not had Finn do or even try to do anything really BIG
On Cirawei he spent a lot of his time like
My baby boy. My sweet cheese.
And then, helping but, like, in pretty small, individual ways!
Which is ultimately, the kind of life Finn is going to lead....he’s always going to HELP people, it’s so foundational to his personality. But he’s kind of learning to take less on, and rely more on other people to help and that not being able to help every single person in a BIG, MONUMENTAL way doesn’t make him useless
And a lot of what i want to do in Xim is Finn learning to appreciate and value OTHER ways of helping people than just ‘jumping in front of a bus for them’
Yeah, moving away from that slowly but surely would be. Good.
I know he’s not there yet based on your canon point, but he needs to. GET THERE EVENTUALLY
AND SOME OF THAT IS JUST LIKE....AGE?
I’m joking but also I’m not joking
I’m actually looking forward to a mission down the line that’s back in Finn’s wheelhouse a little but
With a better outlook than he had on Alydhion
But anyway these are just GENERAL THOUGHTS, not plans
Naturalistic character writing isn’t really linear, and there will always be ups and downs and some backward moves and sideways moves and also a lot of room for
STUFF I CAN’T FORSEE AT ALL, because that’s the beauty of collaborative writing like this. I don’t know what events and character interactions will bring that might open or close different doors, and that’s very exciting
I love these thoughts so much and I want him to get to just be a normal guy..........
I mean there’s AN EPISODE of Adventure Time where Finn decides to just, take on a new identity and live as like, Just Some Guy and ultimately, it’s not really what he wants. He was just extremely overwhelmed and burnt out and needed a break
AND I DONT THINK FOR A SECOND THAT PART OF FINN JUST EVAPORATED
Ofc ironically to everything I’m saying in here, i think Finn’s current mood is
‘I’ve been minimally helpful to actively harmful on these missions, i need to step it UP’
Time to find a bus to jump in front of
Tho I think after the talk he and Wei Wuxian had, the guy might throttle him if he was flagrantly self sacrificing for no reason again
Finn: better make sure I have a reason next time
Please don't jump in front of any busses, Finn.
I was almost gonna be like "good"
What wei wuxian needs finn to understand is that he is never ever allowed to sacrifice himself for others while he's around. He's trying to communicate this to ziggy too lmao
Sani_Caranza: can’t wait for the ultimate reversal and for you both to absolutely destroy me with Wei Wuxian getting hurt
Me, desperate to be emotionally wrecked: you better not~
ems gonna start shoving cr in front of buses herself if she has to
derkins: I wish I could say it was a lie
kicks Wei Wuxian under the treads
if youre threading with jake and you hear a distant-but-coming-closer car horn
who says it has to be in a thread with me. Maybe Jake is the bus.
maybe jake is the bus i hate everything about this sentence
safelybeds: I'd be lying if I said it won't happen. There will definitely be a bullet that Natasha will jump in front of
SaroSaron: shaky thumbs up. I live for suffering.
i'm always invested in finn's arc just lmk if there is anything i can throw kazuma at to help facilitate
what wouldnt this idiot do for a girl
“Plunge this sword into your chest”
“Well. Yeah okay, I guess if it’ll help this girl I like”
But yeah. Literally anyone.
it's really fun getting to dig into and watch that, and how his journey (steps forward, steps back) interacts with the people and forces (of personality or other external factors) around him
