Oda has DONE HIS RESEARCH
into his own culture lmao
it's Gion Matsuri time plus Obon so there's a ton of videos up on youtube right now of cultural happenings
the entire scene of Komurasaki doing the slow walk procession is historically accurate. it's what oiran in Kyoto do RIGHT NOW
the hair is accurate, the kimono, the jewelry, the parasol, everything is dead on
Oda is a GenX native so getting into his own culture at this age (sumo, geisha, kabuki, etc) is on brand, good job dude
oooh I mean this only makes sense but it's also not something I ever would have thought about
(he's my age btw, he's like...2 weeks older than me)
love that he got all those details
right?? like, I didn't consider it but all these youtubes I followed before our trip are ponying up summer matsuri details I didn't expect
Virtual Kyoto has some amazing video of the oiran procession literally from last night their time
I've also been watching a cute series on netflix about teenage girls joining a maiko house in Kyoto. I may hate netflix but it has me covered for "quiet Japanese SOL drama involving cooking"
Shinya Shokudo (Midnight Diner), Samurai Gourmet, and now Makanai
A+ do recommend all of them
Shinya Shokudo extra because some of the recurring characters include a gay bar owner and his trans clientele, who are treated well and even given side stories
like the trans actor who was in a sentai show and now has to deal with retro fandom finding her under her new identity as a woman
extra plus plus we ate at a shokudo in Nagano that looked exactly like the se of this show but larger, they even had regulars show up while we were there. it was so cute I couldn't stand it (and the food was just as amazing)
I need to win mega millions so I can take everyone on my plurk to Japan

!!!!!
