this reddit link contains details but does not contain the gif
the gif is of a child eating popcorn
I'd read this but for a still image as well as a gif
missnaya: urgh! thank you, I'll update the post
I did an incognito search and avoided pictures as much as I could--the reddit thread was the most reliable one I'd seen that didn't have any images (and I wouldn't have clicked)
What the fuck. Glad I don't really exist in public Discords with people that'd share this shit, but still.
What I'm hearing is A: Disable automatic loading of any links, and B: Stay the fuck off of any public discord
can anyone tell me how to disable automatic loading of any links on mobile?
Well that's terrifying. Thanks for the heads up.
To be clear, what does "accidentally" sharing it mean?
Like, does that mean someone who copies it without knowing what it is or can it somehow be shared just by seeing it posted by someone else?
Both possibly since just hovering over a gif in discord can make it play
the settings to disable auto-display of linked images are under the 'text and images' setting under app settings, at least on the PC app
I might ahve missed this but does the person / server it's sent to get banned as well ?
i help mod a huge server and sometimes we get raided so
Probably only if they actually played it and didn't just drop it as a bomb
they might have their autoplay off or only have it in non-image link form and link it or somethin, that or use burner accounts to troll
Scams and What to Look out forit's also helpful refresh your awareness of scams, particularly phishing and authentication token stealing. just to make sure no one hijacks your account and gets it banned this way
I believe the context is that there's a scam saying "share this image to a discord server to get free Nitro," which is how people doing the sharing are getting banned
so "accidentally" being "not knowing it's CP out of context"
unfortunately I don't have any further details about if this affects the server/users it was shared to
look at the discord possibly not on just seeing it? there's someone who reports having seen it on server and went "hmmm sounds sus" and being glad they didn't
which suggests that not on sight, but on share
from the reddit link above
also, *looking at the reddit, not discord
draconic: thank you! I must have glazed past that
Yeah, sharing is typically what will get your accounts nuked. Viewing it obviously isn't good either for various reasons, but provided it's reported to NCMEC and not saved locally to your computer, viewing CSEM (while absolutely disgusting) isn't usually enough to get in trouble.
I definitely encourage folks to take whatever safeguards they feel comfortable with, even if the visible image is innocuous.
God this reminds me of a few years back, when people were sharing graphic CSEM on facebook under the guise of "help us identify the adult in this video doing this horrible thing!" and lots of law enforcement accounts had to eventually chime in with "pls don't"
So, what's the takeaway here? Disable all automatic previews in Discord, or just avoid sharing any picture of kids eating popcorn?
if it's specifically tied to a "hey use this for free nitro" being sus about things like that will probably help? but being wary of pics of kids eating popcorn probably can't hurt
sharing is what causes the instant ban
avoid sharing anything that you don't know where the image came from, or aren't familiar with the content beforehand, and especially if you are being asked to share it by someone else
the video in the reddit link is an explanation of how the banning works and what happens exactly, it doesn't show the actual image. it's mostly about how software is being used to fight CP without anybody having to actually look at it
incidentally the scam itself seems to have come from twitter
who wants to bet that this was started by the people who enjoy this kind of 'content' in an attempt to disable a new system to safeguard by trolling
i think it's more likely people just trolling because people that enjoy that kind of content use different more subtle means of communication like youtube comments on videos about animal abuse
oh yeah no like. it's deffo people just trolling or being trolled now
but idk this reeks of 'let's ruin the new tracking system deliberately' to me
and they wouldn't need many people to get that ball rolling
yeah the overall takeaway is "don't share images to another server because someone told you to," that's the most common tactic to spread any kind of scam on discord
this goes double for bots and people you don't know well, but there's always the chance someone you do know was hacked
I personally have a "no sharing any images of minors whatsoever" rule in my servers
that's obviously not a perfect solution either, but
don't share things whose source you don't know becomes the catchall. sharing is disseminating which is why you get banned for sharing
it doesn't appear that viewing the clip without sharing it gets you flagged
emeralddarkness: if it's any comfort, the system isn't particularly new, and it's used in a lot of places. it used to be on twitter before it was removed
If Discord already has this image flagged, I'm assuming the explicit image filter will catch it, if it's turned on for the server?
probably not, since it's an external program that has it flagged
Here's a vid explaining it if you process stuff better in vid form. The image in the YT Vid isn't the one that gets you reported or anything it's a mockup memey thing:
PSA: Don’t Send this Photo on Discord!
