Especially when you try to limit the number of images so that disk space doesn't run out faster than strictly needed.

I don't think It'll need to be THAT big, I'm at about 40MB for 550 active items.

Yes, yes, hyperbole and all that, but my (outdated) character list has over 2.500 characters on it, and character sheets have two pictures each. That's at least a couple of GBs.

And there are ways of doing image conversions to more efficient types, fairly easily.

True, but these are for printing, so I think we want them non-compressed

For printing there's a lot of time that it won't be too noticeable. And we can always experiment.
