when at all possible, let her work her own way through it, then when done have a chat about what went wrong and how she can better handle it

I realized this morning that she wanted to help pour the cereal and milk... but couldn't articulate it. So she was having a melt-down.

but now she's a happy camper -- helping to pour things.
