those services are all a bit shady. I've heard the best way to deal with it is to contact the creditors directly.

got it in one. There's nothing those services do for you that you can't do yourself for free.

I heard an NPR story about this recently, there are non-profit credit counseling agencies that will help you make a plan to pay stuff off,

but anyone who claims that if you pay them they'll clear up the problems without you paying is a scam.
