I've made cake with soda before, the texture's a bit weird

I think the problem with that recipe is the batter sits around & gets stirred a bunch before baking, so it loses fluff

that's why it ended up so dense

many of the soda bubbles popped, so less air in cake

I'd add the standard ingredients to the cake mix, then divide batter and add coloring
