doesn't understand half days becuase of holidays.. on some level I believe we should work 16 hours today to make up for tomorrow

Do you find working more hours gets more done? People are actually more productive the shorter hours they work.

Everyone enjoy the US holiday weekend. Ours was earlier this week so it was kinda low key.

The best way to handle that is to not tell them half day until an hour to go. :-)
