I think the big thing with twitter is the im/txt intergration combined with the reply style of conversation. A simple status update isn't!
If Pownce would just use AJAX to expand comments inline like this then they would have been the perfect replacement. Plurk may win now.

Yes, Plurk has public and private threads, fan & friend, cliques, and u can limit noise by marking threads read. Can't do that on twitter
I'd like Plurk more if it would stop mysteriously unmuting threads like this one!
