didn't diversify enough. I have listened to the story of end of Hostess first hand from a good friend who does financials for them. She's been predicting this as long as I've known her. The workers who
wouldn't accept yet another wage cut are not the real reason this company can't make it. Hostess can't afford a work force that will work for as little as they can afford to pay. That's econ 101 folks
I KNOW BUT I LIKE TWINKIES! criesforever
Not that I eat them a lot, but still
WSJ article The CEO abruptly leaves and a new guy who specializes in restructuring comes in, but he isn't even on for a year before the strike happens.
yeah, but therein lies the issue. Everyone USED to eat them a lot. But when was the last time any of you had a ho ho or a ding dong, or fed them to your kids if you have them? I love them too. But from afar
We don't care about your logic.
We care about our sugary snacks.
It is a sad day for junk food. I'm sorry to see them go, whether it was Hostess' fault or the strike's fault.. we are without HO-HOS!
In all seriousness though, this sucks for everyone, the workers, the company and loyal customers.
I can tell you literally a decade ago, they were on the brink of going under. Bravo to them for stringing it along this long. That took sacrifice on both sides. And yeah, my girlfriend is in a plant
months ago when the last round of corporate chaos happened with Hostess, my housemate and I went out and got a box of Twinkies
the twinkies of today do not resemble the beloved memories we hold dear.
that is the main employer in her town. This is disastrous for them. But obviously, she more than saw it coming, and chose to ride it out
Starbucks just opened an upscale cupcake store at my mall. j/s.
They went bankrupt already. They were trying to cut costs and work with the union and workers to do so.
I pretend they do.
dude it's not only because of trans fat removal that they got so awful
cost reductions, less quality ingredients overall. also, folks..
When I eat one I can feel my arteries screaming.
can't hear my arteries over the screaming of my tastebuds.
that means that with time, what seemed delicious to us when we were young doesn'T mean we will enjoy it as much as adults. that's taste developing.
oh they are not exactly out of trouble either
They offer different 'types' of items too, ones that are not completely junk food.
Beck: doesn't mean that the division is doing that well
Nobody is denying Hostess was poorly run.
Sun chips for everyone! throws little bags around
Sun Chips are actually a great example of fast food done right
no matter what happens with Hostess anyways, you guys can be jelly of our Vachon cakes.
Oh man. I'm not showing that site to my husband.
right, they aren't idiots. They tried, but too little too late. It is a measure of how bad the situation is that they couldn't weather a work stoppage of more than a week.
I grew up eating that stuff pretty much every day, but I never give it to my kids. They've had ho hos and ding dongs a few times, and can't stand twinkies or the cupcakes.
wonderbread and homepride or sort of a joke in my house. They are like eating flavorless cellulose. Tastes change and companies that are deeply married to old ways are in trouble in every industry.
oh man the cupcakes. DAMN IT
yeah i'm not a fan either
if I had to eat a cookie type snack

definitely timtamss
I was WAY more worked up about Kodak than I am about Hostess. KODAK for fuck's sake. But same thing, they were too late to the digital party.
ReneeF agree - I have 3 kids and I have not purchased any kind of hostess product in years. YEARS. Not even tempted at a 7-11, in desperate hungry mode.
I think the last time I bought a Hostess cupcake was back in the 80's.
right, I'm not really a health food fanatic. I think I'm a pretty average mom. We just give our kids fruit and veggies in their lunches, instead of ho hos and chips. It's just the current "norm"
junk food is profitable. its best marketed as health food now to prey on the ignorance of shoppers who think its special that cereal doesnt contain cholesterol b/c they dont actually know what cholesterol is
junk food isn't profitable anymore? two words: papa john's
well, yeah. Maybe I should say, "old school" junk food isn't profitable. Junk food in the broader sense, "food that isn't in it's natural state and has been flavor enhanced" is always gonna be popular.
but straight sugar with a side of carbs, has been losing market share for a long time now.
honestly of the big chains.. Pizza Hut, PapaJohns, Dominos.. PapaJohns has a better product in this area.
nope! he's been plurked a bunch today.
The CEOs were awful fond of bonuses. For themselves, of course.
if there's a market for it, it'll be produced elsewhere.
