how can this only be 4 LI? I wanted it, but held off playing the machine because I figured it would be primmy and I'd never use it. Mesh blows my mind!

Ya, likely a combination of size, very aggressive lower LODs, and little or no physics shape. Makes it more efficient to render = low LI.
It is, it's gorgeous and I love it so much. I'm so happy I can use it and not blow out my prims
